Lord Buddha's ashes are preserved within bullet-proof doors in the Chaitya of the Thai temple established by the Thai Monastery at Kushinagar, the Mahaparinirvana site of Lord Buddha. These bones were found during the excavation at Pipparahwa near Kapilavastu in 1898.
This information was given to the then King of Thailand, Rama V, so after requesting the British governor, he had called for the ashes of Lord Buddha in Thailand. Later, when the Thai temple was built in Kushinagar, the bone urn was installed in the chaitya built in the temple premises.

The foundation stone of chaitya construction was done by Thai princess in the year 2001. Five years later, when completed in 2005, it was also inaugurated by the Thai princess. The holy ashes of Lord Buddha are placed inside this chaitya. Bulletproof door has been installed in Chaitya for protection of bone urn. The temple is open to Buddhist monks from six in the morning to seven in the evening and from seven in the evening to eight in the evening.
After Mahaparinirvana of Lord Buddha, there was a big controversy over his ashes. Later, the partition of the ashes was then divided into eight major adherents of Lord Buddha, the royal families, which were built by those kings by building the Chaitya (a special type of structure). Was distributed among the Malla kings of Kushinara (Kushinagar), the Mallas of Pavanagar, the Brahmins of Betadweep, the Magadha Raj family, the Lachhivi of Vaishali, the Shakya of Kapalivastu, the Bulis of Alakapp and the Koliya kings of Ramgram.
